Update from the blood-sucking leech front
The Times caught wind of my blog entry exploring the medicinal use of leeches and decided to pursue the issue further. Here's an article they published today describing how a federal board of medical advisers is currently meeting to decide how best to regulate leeches, maggots, and other repulsive, yet useful medical 'devices'. really though, i still don't like 'em. love the leech article in the new yorker-far more comprehensive than the times and the medicinal use of maggots is fascinating as well. people without many resources will reach in and get creative and sometimes surpass those with access to technology and money. do you read gladwells articles and books? he is one of my favorites.
greetings intrigant-i, too, enjoyed the new yorker article much more. that's the beauty of the NYer, if you take the time to charge through their lengthy articles, you're pirate booty's immense.
haven't read any of gladwell's books, just his NYer articles and one or two other short pieces. will definitely look into it more because i dig his writing and the subjects he explores.
its the only magazine that i read cover to cover and you may want to check out gladwell.com or his two books 'blink' and 'the tipping point' he is a very thoughtful person- something that is truly rare nowadays, he sees the shades of grey and makes me look too, for sometimes its so easy to just box things up in neat packets.
as JFK said,' too often we enjoy the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought'
have a great weekend...
thanks for the recommendation. I plan to tackle one of those reads in the near future thanks to your input. by the way, i really like that quote. i think it's a critical point and try to fight myself when i start to show lazy tendencies in my analysis.
later.
